Besom (Ritual Broom)

Broom/Besom

Purpose

Used to energetically cleanse and purify ritual space before ceremonies. Sweeps away negative or stagnant energy without physically touching the ground.

Description

Traditionally made with ash wood handle and birch twigs, bound with willow. May be handcrafted or purchased. Size varies from small handheld altar besoms to full-size standing brooms.

Usage Notes

Sweep the ritual area before casting a circle, moving counterclockwise to banish negativity. Sweep just above the floor - you're cleansing energy, not physical dirt. Bless and consecrate your besom. Can be hung above doorways for protection or jumped over in handfasting ceremonies.
